At Holt Doctors, we understand that the process to register for work in the UK for international doctors can be complex. That's why we're committed to keeping you informed and aim to provide clear insights into the latest developments. Here, we break down significant changes that affect doctors applying for specialist or GP registration, including the introduction of the CEGPR pathway, and what these modifications mean for you.
Understanding the Current Framework
CCT – Certificate of Completion of Training
CCT is awarded to doctors who complete their training through an approved NHS Training program. It signifies eligibility for entry onto the Specialist registration.
CESR – A Bridge for Overseas Experience
CESR was created to help graduates, including those with overseas experience, obtain GMC specialist registration without the need for completing an NHS training program. It has provided a vital pathway for internationally trained doctors to integrate into the NHS without starting from scratch.
Introducing New Standards for CESR & CEGPR
From 30 November 2023, there will be a change in how doctors apply for CESR or a new pathway called Certificate of Eligibility for General Practice Registration (CEGPR, aka portfolio pathway).
Key changes
-
Introduction of CEGPR: This new pathway will allow candidates to use a wider range of evidence to showcase their skills and experience.
-
Flexible and Proportional Evidence Requirements: Both CESR and CEGPR will offer more flexibility in accepting diverse evidence, and the required volume of evidence will be more proportionate to the candidate's specific situation.
What it means for you
-
Easier Transition: The new CEGPR pathway and changes to CESR will simplify the transition into the NHS, particularly for those with international experience.
-
Streamlined Process: A more tailored approach will make the application process less cumbersome.
-
Enhanced Opportunities: The broader range of acceptable evidence opens doors for more doctors to demonstrate their competencies.
-
Alignment with NHS Goals: These changes align with the NHS's commitment to recognizing diverse training and experiences, fostering a more inclusive healthcare system.
