The UK government, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, enacted section 18a of the Medical Act (1983), allowing the General Medical Council (GMC) to grant temporary emergency registration to doctors. This measure was essential during the peak of the health crisis.
In September 2023, it was confirmed that this form of registration would close at the end of March 2024.
If you still hold temporary emergency GMC registration you will need to either join the register fully or remove it before this date. You will not be able to work post March 24 unless you’ve restored your full registration and licence to practise.
The deadline approaches: Act now!
If you hold temporary emergency registration with the GMC, a crucial part of the UK's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to end.
If you wish to continue practising after this period, restoring your full GMC registration and licence to practise is mandatory.
Recommended action plan
Apply sooner rather than later: The GMC recommends submitting your application for restoration as early as possible, and no later than 31 December 2023. While applications can be submitted after this date, they cannot guarantee processing by the closure date of temporary emergency registration.
What happens if you delay: Should your application not be approved by the closure date, you must refrain from practising in the UK until your registration and licence are confirmed.
Where to find forms: Visit the General Medical Council (GMC) website to access the relevant forms for your situation, whether you have practised under the temporary registration or not. The GMC provides detailed instructions and necessary forms to ensure a seamless transition.

For GPs: Various schemes support your return to general practice.
